Barcelona’s managerial situation is rather confusing at the moment. Joan Laporta publicly claimed that “losing will have consequences” now, but he still wants to stick with Ronald Koeman, who seems to have forgotten how to win.
Among the names that have been linked to replace the Dutchman, Xavi seems to be the one leading the race. However, he requests five signings from Laporta and co. if he does, in fact, take over at the helm of the club, according to El Nacional.
The report states that specific names have not been mentioned, but Xavi does have a clear idea of the profile he demands.
On top of that list is a creative midfielder, so that he can play his preferred positional play football using a 4-3-3. While Barcelona’s current midfield of Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Nico, and Gavi is solid, it lacks a creative presence in the final third.
Xavi also wants two fullbacks but is clear about the profile he wants. One of them should be a more versatile option, like David Alaba or Sergi Roberto, while the other one a more offensive option like Jordi Alba or Dani Alves.
Next in the SSpaniard’slist of demands is a winger specialised in dribbling, a profile severely lacking at the club. AAjax’sAntony is one of the options that the club is working on, but the deal is far from completion.
Finally, and quite obviously, Xavi wants a centre-forward. Currently, Barcelona have an injury-prone Sergio Aguero and a far-from-Barça-quality Luuk de Jong as their strikers, which is far from ideal. Joan Laporta wants to pursue Erling Haaland, but that is not plausible right now.
The list goes on…
After all this, Xavi will also request the departure of one of the veterans from the team. All of these dressing room heavyweights — Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Sergi Roberto —
have at some point played alongside the former Barça midfielder, but that seems not to bother him.
Finally, Xavi has also given his okay for the departure of Ousmane Dembele, who he thinks does not fit the positional play system. The Frenchman is more used to counter-attacking football, and with his contract expiring in June 2022, his exit could be closer than fans might imagine.
