Belgium national team coach Roberto Martinez is said to be Joan Laporta’s favourite to replace Koeman at Barcelona. After a few days of speculations, the Spanish coach has addressed the rumours.
“As you can imagine, there’s nothing, really nothing, I can’t comment on it,” Martinez has told Eurosport. (h/t Diario Sport)
Obviously, there are rumours, they are always there. It is normal in football. When you lose three games, the rumours have it that you are going to lose your job.
“When things are going well, when you are getting good results, the rumours are there as well. But there’s nothing from my side to comment on at the moment.”
Diario Sport report that Martinez has a release clause of €1.8m and Barcelona would be willing to meet it if they decide to go after him. His contract with Belgium is set to expire after the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The other candidate on the list is said to be Xavi. However, the president is said to have doubts in his regard.
