Tuchel insists 27-year-old not to blame for Chelsea’s draw vs Burnley despite his big miss

Thomas Tuchel praised Ross Barkley’s performance as a No.10 in Saturday’s 1-1 with Burnley and insisted the midfielder was unlucky not to score the second goal for Chelsea.

Despite his big miss in the second half, the 27-year-old actually made a big impact in his first Premier League start this season.

He created joint-most chances in the game (five) alongside Callum Hudson-Odoi. Chelsea arguably lost some intensity after he came off.

It is just that his finishing really let him down. The former Everton man failed to register any shot on target from four attempts (three off target, one blocked).

“If you watched him in training, you’d see that he deserved to start,” the German said about Barkley in his post-match press conference.

“We changed the shape of the front three a bit today and played with a No.10 behind Burnley’s two No.6s.

“We found that it was the perfect position for Ross to start today. He waited for a long time.

“He had a good match and had the opportunity to [double the lead] with his left foot.

“If you saw him in training, from this position, he’s even more precise with his left foot than his right foot.

“Of course, he’s angry with himself, but we had chances in the first half and the second half, so nobody points the finger at him.”
