Garth Crooks raved about Edouard Mendy following a 1-0 win for Chelsea over Brentford on Saturday.
The goalkeeper was inspired as the Blues went top of the Premier League, with the 29-year-old producing a host of magic moments.
Mendy was called upon several times in the second half. He stood firm to ensure Ben Chilwell’s goal was enough to give Thomas Tuchel a big three points.
The ex-Rennes stopper has been in great form since signing for the club. He helped Chelsea lift the Champions League last season and he’ll be vying for a Premier League medal this time around.
Crooks named Mendy in his BBC Sport Team of the Week; raving about the goalkeeper’s heroics at the Brentford Community Stadium.
He told BBC Sport: “The days when goalkeepers are expected to put their bodies on the line week in week out have long gone. They do their job and go home.
“Edouard Mendy on the other hand had the ball smashed in his face in a way that would have knocked mere mortals out cold.
The Senegal international simply shook his head, sprung to his feet and went on to make a number of fantastic saves. The tip over the bar from Christian Norgaard’s overhead kick was quite magnificent.
Brentford’s manager Thomas Frank said in his post-match interview that he thought Chelsea were lucky. No, Mendy was outstanding.”
Jackpot: Chelsea have struck gold with signing of Mendy
He may have arrived at Stamford Bridge as an unknown quantity but now he’s one of the best custodians in Europe. It says it all that fans are surprised that he’s not been nominated for the Ballon d’Or this year.
The Champions League winner is instrumental to Chelsea’s fortunes. Nothing against Kepa Arrizabalaga but he just isn’t at the same level as the first-choice stopper.
At just £22 million, Mendy is proving a steal. With performances like this for the rest of the season, Chelsea will be a formidable nut to crack in the title race.
The Blues have signed a lot of big names in the last year or two. However, Mendy might just be the pick of the bunch.
