Chelsea stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points on Saturday thanks to a 3-0 victory against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park – but there was a notable absentee in the shape of Mason Mount.
Reece James scored twice as the Blues took all three points, Jorginho adding the Blues’ third from the spot in final moments.
A defeat for Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium by a Conor Gallagher-inspired Crystal Palace and a 2-2 draw for Liverpool against Brighton saw Thomas Tuchel’s men creep further ahead in the title race.
The victory in the north east was made all the more impressive by the fact Chelsea had to overcome some last-minute squad disruption.
Mount was expected to start again at St. James’ Park after bagging a hat-trick last weekend against Norwich City.
But on the morning of the game, he woke up feeling ill and was sent back to London to recover. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech started behind Kai Havertz instead.
Mount] should have started but he got ill overnight and so we sent him home to London so that we can take care of him better and that he can recover better,” Tuchel explained before the game.
As the Chelsea fans continued to celebrate the three points, Mount took to Twitter to explain his absence further, confirming that his illness was not COVID related.
There was good news too as Mount hinted that he could return before the Blues’ Champions League clash with Malmo on Tuesday night.
“Gutted to have missed the game but what a performance from the lads to get the win,” he wrote.
“Woke up and didn’t feel 100% (non COVID related) but will hopefully be fully recovered over the next couple of days. Up the CHELS!”
