Joe Cole pinpoints missing link that cost Chelsea in defeat to Man City

Joe Cole insists  Mason Mount was the missing link in Chelsea ’s defeat to MANCITY this afternoon.

Chelsea suffered their first defeat of the season as Gabriel Jesus’ second-half strike ensured Pep Guardiola ’s side left the capital with maximum points.

The Blues lacked the intensity and creativity we’ve been used to seeing in the middle of the park and former player Cole feels it was Mount’s absence that cost them, with the England international sidelined with a minor knock he picked up during their Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa in midweek.

‘Chelsea have had the most difficult start to the Premier League so to be there or thereabouts is a great start,’ Cole said on BT Sport.

He’s [Tuchel] always brilliant when he talks, he says what he thinks and feels, he feels he got it wrong.

‘I felt the link was missing, Mason Mount, he was animated and trying to drive his players.

‘Sometimes you have a match with three or four players who are off it and it looked like it. Chelsea will be there or thereabouts challenging because of that man [Tuchel].’

Unlike last week’s 3-0 win over Tottenham when Tuchel switched things up at half-time to change the game, Chelsea had no answers to City’s dominant display.

Cole felt it was the most disjointed he’s seen a Chelsea side under the German boss.

‘Manchester City were exceptional today, they started the game in Chelsea’s faces, they were so good, Bernardo Silva was outstanding, Ruben Dias at the back, Cancelo – all of them to a man incredible,’ he added.

I’ve not seen a Chelsea side under Thomas Tuchel look as disjointed as they did today.

‘It’s not back to the drawing board but it’s one bad performance. We have to give credit to Man City that’s a real champions performance.’

Chelsea now turn their attention to facing Juventus in the Champions League group stages on Wednesday night.
