Coventry City goalkeeper Simon Moore has given special praise to the quality of current teammate Ian Maatsen, who’s on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
Maatsen, 19, is a defender that’s been on Chelsea’s books since 2018.
The full-back spent last season on loan with Charlton Athletic before joining Championship club Coventry in the summer for another spell away from Stamford Bridge.
He’s currently thriving in the Coventry XI as a left wing-back, with his pace and energy massive positives to his game.
His loan club sit fourth in the Championship table chasing promotion to the Premier League.
Moore has been blown away by the individual ability that the Chelsea-owned player has.
The experienced 31-year-old goalkeeper says it’s “not normal” how good he can be on an off day.
“It says a lot about how good he is that even a slightly off day stands out as exceptional. It is not normal.
The kid is bright, he’s hugely talented, he wants to learn, and he never gives up,” Moore told The Athletic.
Chelsea system perfect for Maatsen
Of course, Maatsen is still in the infancy of his career.
It does look like he can enjoy long-term success as a wing-back, though.
Chelsea’s first-team squad have enjoyed great success using a formation with wing-backs under manager Thomas Tuchel.
Also, it’s something that worked in their favour dating further back to their most recent Premier League title.
Maatsen is developing rapidly this season at Coventry and going forward on the flanks he’s a menace.
If he continues at this rate, he should have eyes on making a breakthrough under Tuchel.
Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso are Chelsea’s outstanding left wing-backs right now at Stamford Bridge.
They are definitely role models for Maatsen to study.
