Mason Mount will play no part in Chelsea’s Champions League clash against Malmo on Tuesday but Christian Pulisic is back in the squad after a long injury lay-off, Thomas Tuchel has confirmed.
Mount missed last weekend’s 3-0 victory away at Newcastle through illness and isn’t feeling well enough to stage his return yet.
USA winger Pulisic, meanwhile, had endured a torrid time with an ankle injury this season, making just one Premier League appearance on the opening day of the campaign.
While the 23-year-old will make the trip to Sweden to take on Malmo, Mount, Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Mateo Kovacic remain sidelined.
‘These four players are out, unfortunately,’ said Tuchel in his pre-match press conference. ‘But for Timo, Romelu and Kova no surprise.
‘For Mason, he does not feel really better.
‘To stop any speculation, it’s not Covid – he’s just ill and does not feel good enough to take part in training and, of course, take part in the trip to Malmo.
‘The good news is Christian Pulisic is back and back in the squad for tomorrow.’
The Blues are currently in second place in Group H, three points behind leaders Juventus, who play Zenit on Tuesday.
Tuchel’s side also top the Premier League table after 10 games, and the German boss is happy with the position his team are currently in.
‘We are in a good place, he added. ‘At the same time, we set the standards that we set in every match that arrives. So tomorrow we start again from scratch
