Jorginho shares how Reece James reacted to his taking Chelsea penalty in Newcastle win

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has explained why he did not let teammate Reece James take the penalty in the 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Blues were already leading by two goals thanks to James brace when Kai Havertz won a penalty in the 80th minute of the game.

James could have been the first-ever defender to score a hat-trick in the Premier League if he had taken the penalty, but Jorginho took the responsibility as he usually does.

The Italy international did not disappoint, though, as he sent Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow the wrong way and sealed the win.

Still, some Blues fans might have questioned why Jorginho did not just allow James to take the penalty.

“If he had wanted it he would have said it to me, but he didn’t,” the former Napoli star said after the game.

“Instead, he came to support me.”

Speaking to Chelsea TV, Jorginho also highlighted the impact that the right wing-back had on the game.

“He’s amazing with both feet,” he said of James.

“He opened the game for us. It was great, two beautiful goals.”
