Chelsea fans send clear demand to Thomas Tuchel after Southampton victory

The Blues managed to overcome a slight scare to beat Southampton on Saturday and Ross Barkley impressed with his brief cameo on the pitch.

Some Chelsea supporters are calling for Ross Barkley to start against Brentford once the international break is over.

The Blues managed to avoid a slight scare against Southampton to win 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, with Barkley impressing during his brief cameo on the pitch.

The hosts took the lead through an early Trevoh Chalobah header but the Saints were level in the second-half when James Ward-Prowse converted from the penalty spot.

However, Southampton captain Ward-Prowse was then shown a red card after a challenge on Jorginho, meaning Chelsea had a man advantage for the remainder of the match.

Timo Werner converted from close range to hand the Blues a 2-1 lead in west London before Ben

Chilwell wrapped up the scoring in the dying stages of the Premier League clash – to put Chelsea back at the top of the top-flight table.

For the home side’s second goal, Barkley played a fantastic pass to Cesar Azpilicueta, before the Blues defender found Werner in the middle, who made it 2-1

Barkley was only on the pitch around 10 minutes, with the former Everton star making his first Premier

League appearance of the season, but did enough to impress some Chelsea supporters in the brief cameo.

Many fans were left rather confused when Thomas Tuchel opted for Barkley off the bench rather than Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech, but the Chelsea boss explained his decision after the match.

When asked if Havertz and Ziyech’s form is a concern, Tuchel said:

“We always try to do our best to get the players in the best shape but at some point, after a lot of chances, we have to admit that Kai and Hakim are not in their very best shape.

“That may not even be their fault it’s just like this at the moment.

They struggle at the moment to be decisive. But we had a period after pre-season when Kai and Hakim were very decisive for us.

“Hakim was a key player throughout our preparation and in his first game against Villarreal in the Super Cup. Kai also delivered the assist for Hakim’s goal.

“They have maybe lost a bit of belief, confidence, whatever.

We will not stop trying to boost them. Nobody is angry at them and nobody has major concerns, but we have to pay attention to the actual form.

We need to win games and today was a day that we needed a bit of a mix of players who are used to our style with quick decisions because we knew about Southampton’s pressing.

“And on the other hand, we wanted other players who maybe don’t feel the pressure so much and maybe don’t have the same high expectations of themselves and also from us the expectations are also very high for Kai, Timo, Hakim.

“That’s not because we want to overwhelm them but because we know what they can deliver and we want to have it. At a club like Chelsea, you need to be sharp every three days and fight for your place. This is what is going on.”
